Health and safety is taken very seriously at Forest Fuels

We have dedicated, full time staff working proactively to make sure we do everything possible to prevent issues.

Mark Close is Forest Fuels’ HSQE Manager and takes the lead on all matters relating to health and safety including the planning of suitable and appropriate training provision for all team members.

Mark’s engineering background, specifically in the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service has ensured that safety has always been at the forefront of his ‘professional day’. Mark holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Health and Safety Management from Oxford Brookes University and is a Graduate Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health.


The Forest Fuels way instils the responsibility for care over health and safety matters right down to each individual member of staff, as Mark Close explained, “It’s not about dictating rules and regulations and quoting scary statistics, instead we take the approach of training and communication amongst team members. The more we can get everyone across the business to understand about how we operate and where the areas of potential risk are, the more successful we can be in creating the culture of prevention and risk-reduction to reach and maintain our target of zero harm.”

We handle thousands of tonnes of material every month and it’s crucial to make sure that safe operational procedures are habitual practice throughout the business”.

Forest Fuels adds another Business Development Manager

Mark Coghlan joins the Team 

Mark’s career is steeped in renewables and business development. With a deep understanding and wide experience of the energy markets, most recently he’s been specialising in new business opportunities that reduce carbon output and the reliance on fossil fuel consumption - developing green energy solutions for schools, universities, agriculture, engineering, process and leisure industries.

Previously Mark worked for a number of the UK’s most successful energy businesses including spells at eco2 on biomass, wind and solar projects plus household names such as E.ON, Connaught and British Gas.

Cultivating and nurturing long term and mutually beneficial relationships has been at the core of his career to date. On his appointment to Forest Fuels, as business development manager Mark said, “I’m really pleased to be joining such a progressive, ambitious and forward-thinking company. Forest Fuels is on an exponential growth curve and I’m looking forward to making my contribution to the continued success as part of the team.”

Born and educated in Sandbach, Cheshire, Mark went onto Manchester Polytechnic. He now lives in Solihull and has a family of 4. In his spare time, he enjoys camping, kayaking and fund raising for local charities as his wife is a Scout leader!

Forest Fuels adds New Energy Supply Contracts Manager to Team

Allison Stewart is the latest addition to the rapidly growing Forest Fuels’ team.

Says Allision, “ I’m really pleased to be taking up the challenge of this new role. Energy Supply Contracts are in very steep demand as they offer all of the benefits and economy of sustainable biomass energy with none of the risk or hassle of running them. It’s my job to take responsibility for the smooth and efficient running of the installations”.

Allison joins from her most recent job in South Africa where she ran an insurance brokerage for 12 years heading up a team of 20 covering compliance, HR, finance and administration of insurance policies for 3,500 clients.

Originally from Leicester, Allison moved to Devon at the age of 13 and has now returned to the south west to set up her new family home to live and work.


Educated at Coventry University where she studied to earn a degree in Business Studies (Honours) from where she started her working career in a software and firmware engineering company serving the construction industry for 9 years. Then came the bold move to South Africa with her husband. They started their family whilst abroad and now have a 10 year old girl and 6 year old boy back in the UK.

The insurance role involved analysing large amounts of data which will chime in with the role at Forest Fuels where boiler efficiencies are set and reviewed by remote monitoring helping installations to achieve the maximum output and keeping downtime to the absolute minimum.

Based at Forest Fuels’ headquarters in Okehampton, Allison will be taking care of biomass boiler installations the length and breadth of the country.



Peter Solly shares secret of Forest Fuels’ growth with region’s leading business chiefs

The growth and development of the biomass industry was debated last week at a Business Insider roundtable event, when Forest Fuels' managing director Peter Solly was asked to share his experiences with senior business leaders from across the region.

The debate, hosted by South West Business Insider magazine, focussed on business development and confidence across all industries; opportunities for top-line growth in 2016/17; which markets are growing; which markets are shrinking; and the barriers for further growth.

“It was an extremely informative event,” said Peter, “which highlighted many of the issues and opportunities that all leading businesses – from a variety of industries across the South West – are facing.”

£10 million in funding available for biomass boilers
Business leaders at the event were particularly interested in Peter’s announcement that Forest Fuels has £10 million in funding available, right now, to help businesses across the UK bring biomass boiler projects alive.

“It’s satisfying to give the business community the reassurance that biomass is very much a growth industry, with excellent prospects for business in the industry and for businesses that wish to move away from heating their sites with fossil fuels.

“Other business leaders were interested to hear how Forest Fuels’ energy supply contracts and commercial boiler buy-back schemes are already enabling organisations to eliminate their reliance on fossil fuels, lower their heating bills and often have a lump sum to invest back into their operations.”

It took place at Sandy Park Conference Centre in Exeter.
